WhatsApp is probably the best-known messenger service, along with Signal and Telegram. It can be used to send not only text messages but also photos, videos and files. However, this can become confusing when used frequently: We then search for important messages for a long time in the course, have to scroll until we have found the right contact or write unformatted texts that are not very descriptive for readers. Of course everyone has their own strategy on how to handle Whatsapp. But here are some new things you might want to know.
However, with a few simple WhatsApp tricks, you can adapt the app to your needs and customize texts, contacts and messages.
HOW TO FORMAT YOUR TEXT RIGHT
Format your text to create custom WhatsApp messages.
To make WhatsApp messages more appealing or to highlight parts of them, you can format the text. It’s as simple as this:
Bold: Put an asterisk before and after a word. It will look like this: *example*.
Italicize: Put an underscore before and after a word to italicize it. This is how it will appear in your text: _example_
Strikethrough: In some cases, you may want to cross out a word. To do this, you can embed the word you want between two tilde characters. It looks like this: ~example~.
Note: What looks like a messy combination of special characters and words in your typed message will appear as formatted text in the chat after you send it.
PERSONALIZE CHATS
Another handy WhatsApp trick is to mark contacts and messages that are especially important to you.
Whether at work or in your free time: It’s useful to have the most frequently used contacts quickly at hand. After all, there are usually people to whom we write particularly often. These can be parents, friends or partners, but also colleagues at work.
We may also want to access particularly important messages later without having to search for them for a long time. But how do you find them in the jungle of messages?
These two WhatsApp tricks will help you organize your contacts and messages clearly:
- Pin chats: Pinning chats means that they are always at the top of your chat list, even if the last message was a while ago. This way, you can always keep an eye on your close contacts. To pin a chat, open the chat overview and swipe the desired chat to the right (iPhone) or press and hold it (Android). Then select the “Pin” option. The pin icon is used to indicate fixed contacts. You can also undo the process with the same motion.
- Tag messages: Whether photos, links, addresses or kind words: Some messages you want to find again quickly. You can mark them with a star and add them to your favorites. You do this by holding down the desired message and then tapping on the star. You can find the marked messages in the respective chat overview under the category “starred”.
